Research Project: Thacensium/Thaca/Zagtoun (Nord-Est Tunisie) : Transformation d'une cité antique durant le Haut Moyen Age
The research project entitled "Thacensium/Thaca/Zagtoun (North-East Tunisia): Transformation of an Ancient City during the High Middle Ages" is a continuation of a post-doctoral research work that concerns the study of settlement and archaeology in the mountainous environment of Berber societies in North-East Tunisia. Within the framework of a one-month research mobility in Hamburg, I plan to explore the question of settlement and the transformation of the urban structures of the ancient city of Zagtoun which became, during the early Middle Ages, a centre of political power in a vast territory. This research work consists of studying the historical evolution of this locality through its urban transformation and the continuity of the settlement between Late Antiquity and the High Middle Ages. In the Zaghouanese, research on this period has long suffered from a lack of documentation, both textual and archaeological, at a time of profound reorganisation of the rural and urban settlement pattern. Until now, only the site of Zagtoun has provided convincing evidence of the continuity of occupation of a rural domain, in different forms, during this transitional period between Late Antiquity and the High Middle Ages.
