We cordially invite you to our (Islamic Studies) workshop “Not the Conquerors’ Religion: Local Beliefs vs. Imperial Religion” on Thurs Feb. 10 – Fri., Feb. 11, 2022 either on zoom or in person. We will have a two-day hybrid workshop, starting each day at 12.00 to cope with the various time differences.
The workshop looks behind the (source) depiction of the Arab conquest making Islam the dominant force in a region that extended from the Atlantic as far as the Hindukush by examining the continuation of local non-Muslim social and religious structures and their political adaptation or resistance to the new reality of the Arab-Islamic Empire; by nuancing the understanding of Islamization; by exploring conversion to a form of Islam other than the Islam of the conquerors, and considering this as a means of resistance to the political dominance of the new regime.
